Scientists at Western University have indicated for the very first time the molecular mechanisms at the office that cause cannabidiol , or CBD, to block the psychiatric side effects due to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive chemical in cannabis.
It’s been formerly shown that strains of cannabis with a high amounts of THC and lower levels of CBD can cause increased psychiatric results, including paranoia, anxiety, and addictive-behaviors, but why that has been occurring wasn’t completely grasped.
Steven Laviolette, PhD, along with his research group used rats to analyze the part of the molecule into the brain’s hippocampus called extracellular-signal regulated kinase (ERK) which triggers the neuropsychiatric outcomes of THC.

A professor at Western’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry“For years we have known that strains of cannabis high in THC and low in CBD were more likely to cause psychiatric side-effects,” said Laviolette. “Our findings identify when it comes to first time the molecular mechanisms through which CBD could possibly block these THC-related side effects.”
The study, posted in the Journal of Neuroscience demonstrates that rats which were offered THC had higher degrees of activated ERK, showed more anxiety habits and had been more responsive to learning that is fear-based. Rats that have been provided both CBD and THC acted like the control rats: that they had normal quantities of activated ERK, less anxiety habits, and had been less responsive to learning that is fear-based.
